Hybrid COOP stores allow customers to shop anytime – but until recently, this did not apply to cigarettes. Due to legislation and the need for age verification, these products could not be offered in self-service mode.
In cooperation with the PMI tobacco group, we have developed and delivered the first cigarette dispenser that overcomes these challenges. The dispenser is located in a pilot COOP store and enables the purchase of cigarettes even outside regular opening hours.
Customers are verified upon entering the store via bank identity, and the actual dispensing of cigarettes takes place through a specially secured module with strong locks and camera system monitoring.
The dispenser was manufactured and assembled within 4–6 weeks, and its installation in the store took only two hours. With this solution, the range of products available in self-service mode has expanded significantly – previously, cigarettes were not available at all.
COOP currently operates approximately 100 hybrid 24/7 stores, where these dispensers could be deployed. The project not only has a practical impact but has also received recognition in the international IDC Digital Future Awards competition.
